Frequently Asked Questions
General Surrogacy FAQs
-
Surrogacy in Canada is legal, but surrogates cannot be compensated under the Assisted Human Reproduction Act. Canadian surrogates can however receive reimbursement for costs incurred in the course of their pregnancy - this is known as altruistic surrogacy. This restriction may limit the availability of surrogates in Canada. By providing access to international surrogates, Vida Surrogacy offers an alternative for families who are having difficulty finding a local surrogate.
-
We offer both gestational and traditional surrogacy.
Gestational surrogacy: The surrogate is not genetically related to the child. An embryo, created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the egg and sperm of the intended parents or donors, is implanted in the surrogate's uterus.
Traditional surrogacy: The surrogate uses her own egg, making her the biological mother of the child. The sperm is usually provided by the intended father or a donor.
In both cases, the surrogate agrees to transfer the parental rights to the intended parent(s) after the child is born, according to legal agreements made before the pregnancy.
Frozen Donor Eggs FAQs
-
We have one of the largest egg donor programs anywhere, and we have hundreds of active donors at any time. Each week, our doctors may see 20 – 30 new prospective donors.
-
We do have certain donors who already have Canadian compliant vitrified (frozen) donor eggs ready for use, but in such a case where a new donor must be prepared and cycled, we do not work with an egg donor database for clients. We find this an inefficient way to work as many donors may be already matched, and we want to only offer donors who are ready and willing to donate at that time. We use our Egg Donor Selection Form to streamline the process, and we hope to offer a number of donors who may be right for you.
-
We offer anonymous donors, but it may be possible to find an identity release donor who will consent to their identity release when the donor conceived child turns 18. In such a case, and consented at the time of donation, if a donor conceived child contacts ReproVida on or after their 18th birthday, it may be possible to release the donor’s name and last known address to the child.
-
We will typically hold a donor for 5 days to allow enough time for consent signing and payment. If longer than 5 days, the donor may be offered to other intended parents.
-
If we have eggs in our bank, it typically will take about 3 weeks. If a donor must be prepared from the beginning, this is not a straightforward answer. In reality, there are numerous variables that may dictate how long each process takes. If a donor has not had standard genetic testing previously, for example, this process by itself could take approximately 1 month. Generally, from start to finish, the process will take 3 - 4 months, but we will update you as each stage progresses.
-
If ova (eggs) are already in our bank, this will not be an issue. If a donor must be cycled from the beginning, things can and do happen as it is a biological process, and this is always disappointing. A donor may change their mind (it happens), a donor may not pass a certain part of the screening, etc. In such a case, we will offer a rematch at no cost.
-
We are all carriers of recessive gene mutations. The issue usually becomes when both the egg and sperm provider are carriers of the same mutation, known as autosomal recessive inheritance. In such a case, there is typically a 25% chance a baby will manifest the specific disorder. Therefore, if the sperm provider has a genetic carrier screen that shows they are a carrier of a gene mutation that donors have not been tested for, we may be able to do additional testing on the donor to ensure there is no negative genetic match. There will be a small additional cost to do additional gene studies.
-
All donors undergo a rigorous medical and psychological evaluation in order to be eligible to donate. No donor who has not passed all medical or psychological tests will be allowed to donate. A health Canada compliant Summary of Records including results of infectious disease testing, physical exam, and genetic carrier screen will be provided to your Canadian clinic along with other important infor- mation for your receiving lab.
-
If you request additional services such as additional gene studies for the donor, it may be possible, but it will a have small additional cost.

If normal semen parameters, we will replace the eggs at no charge. We are committed to your success.
